How to Calculate Square Footage (Sq Ft)

Square footage is the standard unit of area measurement used in the United States construction, flooring, painting, and remodeling trades. Calculating square footage accurately ensures you order sufficient material without running out mid-job or overspending on excess stock.

Square Footage = Length (feet) × Width (feet)

If measurements include inches, convert inches to decimal feet by dividing by 12 before multiplying. For example, 14 feet 6 inches equals 14 + (6 / 12) = 14.5 feet.

Contractor Waste Allowance Rules

Never order the exact net square footage of a room. Cutting along perimeter walls, obstacles, doorways, and fitting corners results in scrap waste. Use these industry rules of thumb:

Practical Job-Site Example

Suppose you are estimating hardwood flooring for a master bedroom measuring 16 feet 6 inches by 14 feet:

  1. Convert length: 16 + (6 / 12) = 16.5 ft.
  2. Calculate net area: 16.5 ft × 14 ft = 231 sq ft.
  3. Apply 10% contractor waste: 231 × 1.10 = 254.1 sq ft.
  4. If the flooring costs $4.20 per sq ft, estimated material cost is 254.1 × $4.20 = $1,067.22.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate square feet for an L-shaped room?
Split the L-shaped floor plan into two distinct rectangles (Rectangle A and Rectangle B). Calculate Length × Width for each rectangle separately, then sum the two areas together.
How many square feet are in a square yard?
One square yard equals exactly 9 square feet (3 feet × 3 feet). To convert square feet to square yards, divide total square feet by 9. Carpet is frequently priced by the square yard.
Can I export my job estimates to a PDF on my phone?
Yes. With the Square Foot & Job Estimator Android app, you can compile multiple rooms, apply labor rates, contractor markup, and sales tax, and export clean PDF quotes on site without internet access.
